Yushchenko asks election commission to register Tymoshenko bloc

KIEV, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked the Central Election Commission to reconsider registering Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc for the election campaign, a presidential spokesperson said Monday.

Early elections were set June 4 as part of a deal between the Ukrainian president and his arch-rival Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych amid a crisis that broke out after the president accused the premier-controlled majority coalition of usurping power in early April and ordered the legislature to dissolve.

The election campaign officially began in Ukraine August 2, 60 days before the elections.

"I will ask the Central Election Commission to reconsider registering members of the Yulia Tymoshenko bloc voluntarily, without a court decision," Yushchenko was quoted as saying.

Earlier in the day, Tymoshenko asked the president in writing to secure the rights and freedoms of people when holding snap parliamentary elections September 30.

Last Friday, the country's election commission failed to decide within three days on the registration of Tymoshenko bloc members, citing non-compliance with election laws. Among other things, Tymoshenko's candidates failed to provide their addresses.

Tymoshenko accused parliamentary coalition parties of attempting to remove her bloc from the election campaign. Supporters of her bloc started rallying Saturday in front of the Central Election Commission building.

Meanwhile, members of parliamentary majority parties said the Tymoshenko bloc had been exerting pressure on election commission officials.

The bloc, led by Yulia Tymoshenko, Yushchenko's fiery ally in the 2004 "orange revolution" protests that swept him to power, and in opposition to the premier in the latest standoff, is the third most popular group, with 11.6%-14.3%.
