All derailed phosphorus cars in West Ukraine righted - official

// 30.07.2007 06:52 //
All 15 yellow phosphorous tanker cars that overturned in Western Ukraine last Monday have been hoisted back onto the tracks, the emergencies ministry said Tuesday.

A ministry spokesman said the cars would shortly be sent back to Kazakhstan via Russia, escorted by two firefighting trains.

The accident occurred when a freight train en route to Poland from Kazakhstan derailed outside Lvov, near the Polish border. Several cars caught fire, sending poisonous fumes over a large area.

Official reports said 49 people, including 15 children, were injured and 14 populated areas with a total of 11,000 residents affected. During the clean-up operation, 18 emergency workers were also poisoned. Some 800 people were evacuated from the polluted area.

The Ukrainian government said the accident was the country's largest man-made disaster after the 1986 Chernobyl tragedy.

A special commission was set up to investigate the accident and criminal proceedings have been launched.

Ukrainian authorities have cited the poor condition of the railroad as the main reason for the accident.

A Kazakh company that produces phosphorus said earlier it was ready to retrieve and transport the dangerous cargo back to Kazakhstan.
